Contents of the course
The Solar Thermal & Associated Renewable Storage master specialization education program offers a very innovative formation and training in all solar thermal energy sciences and technologies.
This includes a unique focus on Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST), Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Solar Thermal Electricity (STE), Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP), Solar Fuels (e.g. hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction), etc. The STARS specialization also offers the exceptional opportunity to learn practical skills on many solar thermal facilities.
During the specialization semester education program, students will acquire:
Solar labs
During hands-on lab work sessions, students will use original solar facilities. These sessions illustrate theoretical concepts approached during lectures and tutorials, regarding heat transfer and storage, concentration optics, materials science, etc.
And you get to cook a meal using solar energy!
Technical visits
PROMES solar facilities
Students will visit Themis solar tower (Targasonne, near Font-Romeu) and Microsol’R parabolic trough (next to the solar furnace). Both are part of PROMES-CNRS laboratory research facilities and visits are ensured by expert researchers and engineers in the field.
eLlo SUNCNIM Fresnel solar power plant
Students will have a unique occasion to visit and exchange with project responsible engineer of eLLO solar thermal power plant by SUNCNIM company. It is the world’s first Fresnel solar thermal power plant with an energy storage capacity, implanted in Llo, near Font-Romeu.
Termosolar Borges parabolic trough solar power plant
Students will visit Termosolar Borges hybrid biomass-parabolic trough solar thermal power plant in Les Borges Blanques, near Lleida in Spain.
